How We Fix It
Most of the houses we work on in Leawood went up around 1989, which puts them a full generation past the 1960s-70s stock that fills a lot of the neighborhoods closer to Kansas City. That matters for cable work because a door built in the late 80s is almost always on a torsion spring system with the lift cables running down each side to the bottom bracket, not the older extension-spring setup with cables looping over pulleys at the back of the horizontal track. When a cable snaps on a torsion door, the door usually drops crooked and hangs at an angle instead of falling all the way. We unwind the springs to release tension safely, pull the broken cable off the drum, run a new one to spec, and check that the drums are seated square before we let the door cycle again. On a two-car door we check both cables even if only one broke, since they age at the same rate and a second failure a few weeks later is common.
Getting It Booked In
We're based in Kansas City and Leawood sits about 16 miles out, so we route the job in with other calls on that side rather than treating it as a special trip. Tell us whether the door dropped straight down and stopped, or dropped unevenly to one side - that tells us before we arrive whether we're likely looking at one cable or a spring that took the cable with it. If the door is already off its tracks or a panel is bent, mention that too, since it changes what we bring on the truck.
Parts We Carry
We carry standard-gauge lift cable in the lengths that fit torsion-era residential doors, along with the drums, bottom brackets, and safety cables that go with a proper repair rather than a patch job. Leawood's household incomes run well above the regional median, and in practice that means more of these doors were installed with a heavier insulated panel than the base builder-grade door - which puts more load on the cable and the drum than a lighter door would. We stock cable rated for that heavier pull, not just the lightest option, so we're not sending a truck back out because we under-specced the fix.
Can You Do This Yourself
We'll say this plainly: don't try to replace a torsion-side lift cable yourself. The spring on that same drum is under enough stored tension to break a hand or worse if it lets go while you're working near it, and there's no way to tell how much tension is left in a spring just by looking at it. If you're comfortable with basic tools, you can safely check whether the issue is even the cable - look for a frayed strand near the bottom bracket, or a door hanging crooked instead of stuck flat - and that's useful information to have ready when you call. But the actual cable swap on a torsion system isn't a homeowner job, and we won't pretend otherwise to save a trip charge.
